No matter which phase and scale your project is in, we can help. From the grand planning and development of whole institutions, to specific designs and solutions, conceptual sketching to detailed drawings and plans. Got an idea but unsure of its feasibility? Our workshops and professional sparring sessions will help you determine the best projects and concepts.
The masterplan forms the basis for making informed decisions for your institution and is essential in order to make the most of the site and avoid costly mistakes. It lays out both short-term and long-term goals for the physical development of the facility, aiding in making decisions and securing funds. Taking both animal attractions, visitor amenities and staff logistics into account, we can help develop a masterplan to coordinate growth and prevent ad-hoc solutions that may conflict with long-term goals.
We assist in both the conceptual and physical development of a masterplan, providing detailed maps of the site to be used in the planning process as well as graphics to help all stakeholders understand the process. With extensive knowledge in both zoo management and landscape architecture, we assist in planning and designing the layout of exhibits and structures, visitor loops and pathways, behind-the-scenes facilities and even animal collection planning.

Instead of asking if your zoo can afford a masterplan, you should ask, if you can afford to NOT have one?

Working with you from the first ideas and sketches to the finished concept, through planning and construction, we are here to make sure your project achieves its goals and increase value (and revenue)
We craft beautiful, natural and immersive landscapes that fit within the scope, scale and context of your institution. We produce drawings and plans for all stakeholders in the project as well as the visual materials needed to raise funds for the idea.
One of our key strategies is designing by reference. With a massive photographic library of exhibits and solutions from other zoos, we can quickly identify common and rare solutions and problems and incorporate/consider them into the design. We not only reference other zoos, but let natural ecologies, habitats and behaviour guide our work to see what is possible instead of just probable (and previously doable).
The average zoo enclosure has a lifetime of about 30 years.
When planning new designs, how long do you think ahead?
Do you have a brand-new habitat coming? Or does an existing part of your site need greening? We can provide detailed planting strategies, plans and lists either as part of a masterplan/concept design, or attached to an existing project or redevelopment.
Our niche speciality is the interplay between animals and plants. Too often, zoo design creates gorgeous looking landscapes around the enclosures, but due to practical constraints, leave the animal exhibits barren and uninteresting. We specialise in combining animals with vegetation and other living landscape features, creating habitats that are not only attractive but also functional, boosting both animal welfare and local biodiversity.

Is your zoo living up to it's green, recreational potential for both animals and visitors alike?

Maybe your masterplan needs some revision, a project needs more expertise or you just want a sparring session to help determine what is possible at your site and what creates the most value.
We can help qualify existing project proposals and ensure they are up to modern standards for animal welfare and visitor experiences, as well as functional in day-to-day logistics.
Our extensive professional network within the zoo- and landscape design community allows us to quickly reach out to partners and affiliates and secure the knowledge needed to move the project forward.
Do you have all the expert insights you need and who challenges you to think in new and innovative ways?
"We highly recommend Kåre Thomas Jensen for his outstanding design work.
